After a morning at Brew Coffee, we had the rest of the day to fill — and the rule was the same as every other day on this trip: somewhere new for every meal. We were staying near El Cangrejo, so we started wandering Vía Argentina looking for somewhere interesting for dinner, and El Rincón Habanero stopped us in our tracks.

The name means “The Havana Corner,” and that’s exactly what it is. Step inside and you immediately know the person who opened this place actually loves Cuba — the walls are covered in old photographs and Cuban art, there’s a vintage wooden bar in the corner, and Cuban music is playing just loud enough that you feel it without having to shout over it. It’s small, intimate, a proper neighborhood spot. The kind of place that only exists because somebody decided to bring a piece of home somewhere else.

We started with mojitos — obviously. These were the real thing: proper Cuban mojitos, heavy on the rum and fresh mint, balanced just right. Not overly sweet, not watered down. The kind that makes you order a second before you’ve even looked at the food menu.

The menu is exactly what it should be: ropa vieja, cubano sandwiches, arroz congri, tostones, yuca, frijoles negros. Classic Cuban, no shortcuts. We got the ropa vieja — slow-cooked shredded beef over rice and black beans — and the cubano sandwich, and both were excellent. The ropa vieja especially. Rich, savory, the kind of dish that tastes like it’s been going since the morning. The cubano had that perfect ratio of pork, ham, and cheese, pressed just right. We were pretty happy about all of it.

Cuban food at El Rincón Habanero

For a small place tucked into a side street off Vía Argentina, El Rincón Habanero punches well above its weight. Everything about it felt genuine — the food, the atmosphere, the warmth of the place. They describe it as “un pedazo de La Habana en el corazón de Panamá” — a piece of Havana in the heart of Panama. That’s not marketing copy. That’s just true.

If you’re in Panama City and want a real Cuban meal in a real Cuban setting, this is your place. Just know: the mojitos are dangerously good and the ropa vieja will ruin your appetite for anything less.
